My Life As dolls first appeared in 2012 when Madame Alexander introduced a new 18" play doll collection which featured dolls in different life roles, and were sold exclusively through Walmart. MA had been partnered with Walmart the year before for their 2011 Friends Boutique collection (and with Target for Play Wonder dolls as well as with Cosco for their Girlz collection) but replaced them with the new My Life As dolls.

MADAME ALEXANDER MY LIFE AS DOLLS: PRINCESS, GYMNAST, COWGIRL, EQUESTRIAN, SPORTY GIRL, AND HAIRSTYLIST

The My LIfe As collection (popularly known as "My Life") was about dolls doing what they liked and were good at. There were numerous themes such as My Life as a Gymnast, My Life as a Hair Stylist, and My Life as an Equestrian, a Cheerleader, a Schoolgirl, a Ballerina, an Outdoorsy Girl, a Snow Boarder, a Princess, a Beach Vacationer, a Yoga Instructor, a Cowgirl, a Nature Girl, a Soccer Captain, and many others.

MADAME ALEXANDER MY LIFE AS FACE SCULPTS

Madame Alexander My Life dolls used three separate face sculpts, African American, Asian, and Caucasian, which were generally the same models as their Friends Boutique collection. They had standard MA vinyl chest plates, tilting heads, and cloth mid sections. Some (or all?) may have had bendable limbs.

The dolls came in light, medium, and dark skin; blue, green, or brown open/close eyes; and several shades of blonde, brunette, and ginger rooted hair. Some may have not had the best hair plug coverage and needed to keep their default hair styles to cover sparse areas. But they were cute and popular and carried the Madame Alexander brand.

But in 2014 Madame Alexander bowed out of the My Life As enterprise and CitiToy took over production, introducing some new themes and faces. While they essentially kept the same body style, minus the tilting head/neck, and most of the "My Life As" themes, they did offer two new face sculpts meanwhile doing away with the Alexander sculpts altogether.

CITITOY MY LIFE AS DOLLS: CHEERLEADER, SCHOOLGIRL, SLEEPOVER HOST, WEDDING PLANNER, POP STAR, COWGIRL

The CitiToy sculpts are similar to one another, though one is more smiley, one less smiley. One sculpt is shared by the Caucasian and Hispanic dolls, the other is used exclusively for African American dolls. There are no Asian sculpts.

CitiToy My Life As dolls are actually cute for a lower end doll, with delicately feathered brows and natural face paint. Some dolls have natural looking freckles, which the Alexander dolls universally didn't. They have long curling eyelashes and detailed, colored, open/close eyes in brown, green or blue.

CitiToy also resolved the bald patches in the dolls rooted hair, so they could have more versatile hairstyles. Their hair can be curly, wavy, or straight; long or medium length. It can be pale or medium blonde, ginger/red or auburn, or light, medium, or dark brown.

CITITOY MY LIFE AS SCULPTS

They have vinyl chest plates and cloth mid sections, like the previous Alexander dolls; however, their heads only turn side-to-side rather than pivoting up and down as well as side-to-side. Their legs are bendable. Their vinyl comes in light, medium, or medium-dark. The dolls are grouped as Caucasian, Hispanic, or African American, but some look ethnically generic enough to be of mixed or custom backgrounds.

MY LIFE AFRICAN AMERICAN DOLL AS POLYNESIAN PRINCESS

In 2016, a new and very welcome move by My Life As dolls was the addition of two boy dolls to the collection. They were both My Life as School Boy dolls which have a slightly different construction than their girl counterparts: they are made entirely of vinyl. The full vinyl bodies are proportioned like boys, with broad shoulders and slim hips. They have genuinely cute, though very "boyish" faces, rooted tousled hair, and fixed eyes with no eyelashes.

MY LIFE AS A SCHOOL BOY AFRICAN AMERICAN AND CAUCASIAN

It's my guess that the vinyl bodies, fixed eyes, and no eyelashes were made with boys in mind who might want a doll to rough and tumble without with worrying about fiddly things like batting eyes and eyelashes, though they are undoubtedly also a perfect match for girls who may want a brother or friend for their girl dolls.

MY LIFE AS DOLLS BY CITITOY

The boy dolls come in two different face sculpts and two skin tones, dark and light (with the "light" being half a tone darker than the "light" color for the girl dolls). Walmart lists them as African American and Caucasian, but some buyers have noticed the latter could also be Asian, half-Asian, or another ethnicity.

My Life As girl dolls are very comparable to American Girl dolls in size. They can share most shoes and clothing with no issue though they may be a bit smaller in the hips. Some of them may be slightly taller and their heads are larger and rounder, while their arms, hands, and legs are slightly thinner. Their feet are comparable. They may not stand as reliably or bend at the joints as easily. Their vinyl color is rosier than than AG dolls; this is true for both lighter and darker skinned dolls.

MATTEL AMERICAN GIRL EMILY BENNETT and CITITOY MY LIFE AS CAMP COUNSELOR DOLL

My Life As boy dolls have similar proportions to AG dolls but their hips are definitely narrower and their backsides smaller. They can share shoes and probably most clothes, although pants may not be as interchangeable. Their heads are larger so caps may not share as easily.

My Life As also has its own clothing collections for both boy and girl dolls, though they are sometimes difficult to find.

My Life As dolls are available at Walmart for about $30, though both new and used dolls are very common on the secondary market and have widely varied asking prices: as low as $5 or $10 for used dolls, or as high as $80 or $90 for hard-to-find or retired dolls.

A local thrift store had the earlier school girl complete with purse with fox cartoon graphic. She is spotless clean as mint as retail. I'm not sure why she was given away but definately worth Wal-Mart's 27.97. Her hair is hup in two buns with the matching bow. I got her extra eye glasses the red/pink and got her extra boots to match the red. Anyone out shopping, they have all their doll sculps dressed in a ball gown with fur accents 34.94. Thank you!

Thanks for the tip!

I hope that this request gets to the right person. My niece was born with her right leg missing from just below the knee. She is now 3 years old. Yesterday, they removed her second leg through the knee. I searched all over for a doll with a prosthetic. I finally found one of your dolls at Walmart in the United States. My problem is that the doll is blond like her with the prosthetic on the right leg. Now she is missing the second leg. Is there anyway that I could purchase a second prosthetic for the lert leg. It would mean so much to this little girl. She is 3 years old, and this was her sixth surgery. If so, my email is: nana_papaanderson@hotmail.ca. Thank you so much.

Hello and best wishes for your precious little niece! Unfortunately, this is only a doll information blog and we aren't in any way associated with Walmart or My Life As Dolls. I'm My best guess is you would have to contact Walmart or My Life As with your request? Either way I hope you can get in touch with the right people that can answer your question. Best of luck.

Are my life dolls hair real or simpler do they have real human hair
Little Raven's picture

They don't have human hair. It's probably a synthetic material like Saran.

I was looking at a comparison site and came across a linr of dolls that come with prosthtic legs called sew able dolls. They are almost as high priced as american girl dolls but seem to be really good quality like the ag dolls. The dolls have a below the knee prosthetic on one leg and a full leg prosthetic on the other. Hope this helps.
Little Raven's picture

Great suggestion! I remember seeing these dolls a while back and being impressed. Thanks for bringing them up!

The dolls are really cute and the manufacturer, Sew Dolling, offers optional physical therapy equipment too. Here's the url for anyone who would like to learn more:

Can you please send my life dolls some pjs and cute outfits
Little Raven's picture

Sorry we're just a doll info site. You can probably find My Life As doll clothes at Walmart stores or online.
Julia's picture

Hi! Do you know what the my life as dolls hair is made of?
Little Raven's picture

I don't know for sure what their hair is made of. It's probably a type of modacryclic, but I'm just guessing. The newer My Life As dolls by CitiToy have thick and fairly nice synthetic hair. All of mine had beautiful, very natural hair. While it may not be as nice as American Girl doll hair which is made of Kanekelon (a high quality modacrylic) it is usually very full and soft and shiny, which is like most modacrylic hair.

I have heard some say that My Life As dolls' hair can get a bit tangled. I never had that problem myself, but then my dolls were usually on a shelf where they didn't get played with much! Still, I thought their hair was one of their best features.

Thanks so much for your response! That is very helpful! And a side note, I love all of the great information on your site, very informative! Thanks again!

Thanks, and happy to help!

I found a really pretty doll at my local thrift store the other day for only about $9 in really good condition and couldn't pass her up. I knew her dress seemed familiar but couldn't figure out where I had seen it before. After some searching I found this post and there she is! The party planner doll with the peachy dress! Thanks for having a picture so I could find her. I love to figure out the origins of the dolls I find second hand. Also, she's a gorgeous doll! Highly recommend her to anyone who finds her.
Savana's picture

I do want to add though, that she is actually a wedding planner doll. Took some eBay hunting to figure that out. Thanks again!
Little Raven's picture

So she is! Good catch. And I'm with you, I love doll history and sleuthing!

Do you know , did cititoy make a boy doll version in 2013 ? ? I bought a doll with a wig and it’s supposed to be a boy, it has the same number stamped into back of head as my girl does. I make and sell clothes and if this isn’t a boy I don’t want to make clothes and they not fit a true boy doll. Thanks for any info..
Little Raven's picture

I believe CitiToy My Life As boy dolls were introduced in , and as you can see by the photos above, they had a different body style than the girl dolls. Some clothes may not be interchangeable if we're talking about this particular boy doll.  In 2017 where I tried interchanging his clothes with standard 18" dolls like American Girl boy Logan Everett. Not everything fit.

I don't know of any other 18" CitiToy boy dolls besides My Life As (although there may be). If your boy doll has the same face and body type as the girl dolls shown on this page, he may have been converted from a girl doll and may not be able to share all clothes with , specifically.

However, 18" boy dolls like Logan Everett do fit standard 18" clothes and may be similar in size to My Life As Girl dolls, so clothes made for a converted girl doll may also fit most 18" boy dolls. I haven't tested them all myself, but My Life As Girl dolls can generally share clothes with most 18" dolls like American Girl and Our Generation.

It's really just CitiToy's 2016 My Life As boys that have a different, slimmer body than most other 18" dolls.

Hope that helps.

Hi I am wondering about a boy survivor doll. We are purchasing a bunch of the girl survivor dolls for a donation to a local group but would love a boy! As we have a local survior!!
Little Raven's picture

I'm not aware if Walmart offers boy survivor dolls, although I feel it would be a wonderful idea for your survivor and others. You might contact Walmart for further information.

Anyone have any luck swapping the heads on the MLA dolls? I prefer the all vinyl body but I have only found one version of it and not with a brunette. I was going to by another one and swap the heads but I don't want to waste the money if it won't work...
Little Raven's picture

I don't have an answer for that one as I've never tried swapping heads on a My Life As doll.  I also don't know much about the vinyl-body versions of their dolls other than their boy dolls, although I'm curious. Maybe time for me to investigate/ update.

I recently went to Walmart to buy my daughter a My Life As Doll and I ended up finding one that has one green eye and one blue eye. I'm wondering if anyone else has bought one,is this normal for the dolls, and if not would it be considered a rare doll?

We have the my life as Wrangler Jeep and the UBS cord on the bottom I guess that's where you charged it I don't know we have never even used it yet what should we do I've had it for a while the kids never charged it but they played with it

I'm not a fan of the new dolls honestly. They look very generic whereas the MA sculpts had a very pretty and unique look about them and a lot more expression. The citoy dolls look like they've been in some sort of truma and haven't gotten over the shock. Also the poseable limps makes them very unstable and just look very strange. The boys just don't look appealing at all. Give me a half bald MA my life anyday because honestly "unnatural" freckles sure look better then then these all together. Just my two cents.
MomOf3's picture

I'd really love to see My Life As create a Down syndrome doll. Does anyone know how to get in touch with CitiToy, My Life As, or that division of Walmart to ask about this? I know that people have asked American Girl to create one, and they've declined. I'm not sure if anyone has asked Our Generation. But My Life As has a survivor doll, so maybe they would consider creating a Down syndrome doll.

Question is it a defect on the my life trainer doll that has the rainbow tutu? walmart has the light skinned doll with blue eyes but I found a off site seller that had her with brown eyes. miko2556@gmail.com can some one confirm this.

I bought the My Life Drink Vending Machine about 2 months ago. It worked for a couple of weeks and then it started to act funny! A few of the buttons stopped working here and there and now its not dispensing anything at all... Very disappointed!! My daughter is pretty upset as she has not had it very long!

My 8 year old has vitiligo. Do you know of any way to alter a doll to put patches on the skin? I've seen others have African American dolls, but no white ones, not that i care her playing with those, I would just like to find one that looks liker her, hair, eyes, etc...
Little Raven's picture

I don't know any way to alter a play doll, sorry. This should definitely be an option from the manufacturer.

Purchased my life pizzeria play set and door to oven is missing. Wondering where I could get one to snap on. All sets at Walmart in store were missing door. Thank you

your blog on my life dolls was excellent. Thank you. My grand daughter has both the American girl and My life BOY dolls. Your blog pictures them side by side and you published the measurements for the My Life BOY doll but not for the American girl BOY doll. You said it was similar to AG girl doll. Please can you provide measurements for the AG boy doll to compare with my life one. I want to make clothes for both. PS have you seen the British BOY doll from Designa friend made by Chad Valley for the UK market. They also have a fabulous inexpensive range of skinny 18inch girl dolls similar to gotz.
Little Raven's picture

As far as I know, the AG boy dolls use the same body as the girl dolls, so they should have the same measurements as American Girl dolls.

Does city toy make two mini my life as dolls for every themed 18" doll? If so, do you think they will make a 7" mla mini mermaid explorer doll for spring 2021?

Hello- I am trying to find the My Life As Claw Machine (pink). Any ideas where I can find one of these? Thanks!

I think you should add velcro to the pants and swimsuit bottoms so it would be easier to use on baby alive dolls

I have an Asian My Life As doll! She is beautiful. I found her in an out-of-town Wal-Mart. Her hair is in a bun and she's a ballerina. I named her "Mirabella". If I remember correctly, I purchased her April 2018. I also have one boy doll, the Hispanic/Native American looking. I have AG Logan and true to AG, the clothing doesn't fit. My Life As "Micah" fits all AG clothes perfectly! I love his "bed head", too! Love your blog!
